Vocabulary for biomes, energy flow, and biodiveristy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| interdependence | when living organisms depend on each other or their environment to be able to continue surviving or thriving |
| biodiversity | the number, variety, and genetic variation (differences) of different organisms found within a specified geographic region; so biodiversity includes having lots of different species AND/OR having a lot of genetic variation within a species |
| biotic | living |
| abiotic | non-living |
| radiant energy | light energy or energy from the sun |
| sustainability | how likely an organism or ecosystem is to continue living and thriving |
| detrivores | organisms that consume decomposing plant and animal matter and usually help contribute to the decomposition; ex: worms and mushrooms |
| autotrophs | organisms that can create their own food such as plants |
| heterotrophs | organisms that must consume other organisms for food |
| omnivore | a consumer which eats both plants and other animals; ex: humans |
| herbivore | a consumer which only eats plants; ex: deer |
| carnivore | a consumer which eats only other animals; ex: lions |
| scavenger | a consumer which feeds on dead plants and animals, they are different from detrivores because while they eat dead plants and animals, they don't usually contribute to the process of decomposition; ex: buzzard |
| chemical energy | a type of energy; ALL food is chemical energy |
| thermal energy | heat energy; warm blooded animals use most of the calories they consume to create thermal energy (body heat) |
| chlorophyll | found in chloroplasts in plant cells, it is green in color, and it is what allows plants to absorb radiant energy |
| photosynthesis | the process by which chloroplasts in plant cells create glucose (a type of sugar which is food) by converting radiant energy into chemical energy |
| extinction | when a species no longer exists; it can also refer to the process of the species going extinct |
| thrive | when an organism has very high rates of survival and reproductive success |
| endangered species | a species of plant or animal whose numbers are so low (there are so few left in the world) that they are in serious danger of going extinct |
