Biology Study of living things
Adaptation Inherited characteristic of a species that develops over time in response to an environmental factor, enabling the species to survive
Development Changes an organism undergoes in its lifetime before reaching its adult form
Growth Process that results in a mass being added to an organism; may include formation of new cells and new structures
Homeostasis Regulation of an organism's internal environment to maintain conditions needed for life
Organism Anything that has or once had all the characteristics of life
Organization Orderly structure shown by living things
Reproduction Production of offspring
Response Organism's reaction to stimulus
Species Group of organisms that can be interbreed and produce fertile offspring
Stimulus Any change in an organism's internal or external environment that causes the organism to react
Theory Explanation of a natural phenomenon based on many observations and investigations over time
Metric System Measurement system whose divisions are powers of ten
Peer Review A process in which the procedures used during an experiment may be repeated and the results are evaluated by scientists who are in the same field or are conducting similar research
Science A body of knowledge based on the study of nature
Control Group In a controlled experiment, the group not receiving the factor being tested
Constant A factor that remains fixed during an experiment while the independent and dependent variables change
Data Quantitative or qualitative information gained from scientific investigation
Dependent Variable The event studied and expected to change when the independent variable is changed
Experiment A test, trial, or tentative procedure
Experimental Group A group of subjects who are exposed to the variable under study
Hypothesis A proposition, or set of propositions, set forth as an explanation for the occurrence of some specified group
Independent Variable A variable that is intentionally changed to observe its effects on the dependent variable
