posterior toward back
ventral belly side
dorsal backbone side
medial toward the middle of the body
lateral away from middle; toward the side
midline an imaginary, vertical line through the middle of the body.
deep farther from the surface of the skin
superficial closer to the surface of the skin
proximal closer to the base of an extremity
distal farther from the base of an extremity
sagittal a plane that separates the body into left/right halves
coronal (frontal) a plane that separates the body into front/back (anterior/posterior) halves
transverse a plane that separates the body into top and bottom (superior/inferior) halves
