Living Things
6 Characteristics of Living Things Notes Hon. Biology Ch. 1
Question | Answer |
---|---|
DNA | 1. All living things have DNA 2. Universal code for all organisms 3. Controls all processes in oroganisms |
What are living things composed of? | Atoms |
What are the most important atoms? Hint: CHONPS | Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Sulfer |
What are the important biological molecules? | Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids |
What is growth? Give two examples of an organism growing? | Growth is an increase in body mass due to the assimilation in nutrients while development is caused by chemical and physical changes within the organism 1. An apple seed grows into an apple tree 2. A tadpole develops into a frog |
Give an example of an organism responding to its environment? | Plants grow towards light Dogs will bark at other dogs Some plants have unsavory chemicals on their leaves to ward off caterpillars. |
What are cells? | Cells are the unit of structure and function in an organism cells-tissues-organs-system-organism |
What are the two types of reproduction? | Sexual Reproduction:the first cell of an ells from two parents form to make a zygote (organism)(fertilized egg);increases genetic variation in the next generation Asexual Reproduction:a single organism produces offspring identical to itself; no variation |
Example of Asexual Reproduction | Flowers |
Example of Sexual Reproduction | Humans |
What is Homeostasis? | Homeostasis is maintaining a stable internal environment an organism uses a lot of energy maintaining this balance and all organ systems are involved |
How do plants maintain homeostasis? | plants called the stoma help to regulate gas exchange |
How do humans maintain homeostasis? | Humans begin to sweat when our body temperature rises |
Organisms obtain and use energy... | All organisms must take in materials and energy to grow, develop and reproduce. The sum total of all chemical processes that occur within an organism is called metabolism |
How do living things evolve? | Living things evolve over long periods of time and populations evolve not individuals do not |
What are the Six Characteristics of Life? | 1.All living things grow and develop 2.Living things respond to their environment 3.Living things are made up of cells 4.Living things reproduce 5.Living things maintain a stable internal environment 6.Living things obtain and use material & energy |
