Honors Biology Chapter 1 Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Science | organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world |
| Observation | the process of noticing and describing events and processes them in a careful way |
| Inference | a logical interpretation based on prior knowledge |
| Hypothesis | an explanation to a observation or an answer to a scientific question;can be written as a if/then statement;not true or false its just if its supported by evidence or not;predictions are based off of hypothesis |
| Controlled Experiment | experiment in which one variable is changed |
| Independent Variable | factor in a controlled experiment that is deliberately changed also called the manipulated variable |
| Dependent Variable | variable that is observed and changes in response to the independent variable also called the responding variable |
| Control Group | group in the experiment that is exposed to the same conditions as the experimented group except for one independant variable |
| Data | evidence; information gathered from observations |
| Theory | a well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations and hypotheses and enables scientist to make observations about new situations |
| Bias | a particular preference or point of view that is personal rather than scientific |
| Biology | the scientific study of life |
| DNA | genetic material that organisms inherit from their parents |
| Stimulus (plural Stimuli) | signal to which an organism responds |
| Sexual Reproduction | type of reproduction that forms from the cells of two parents to make a new cell of a new organism |
| Asexual Reproduction | process of reproduction involving a single parent that results in the offspring being identical to the parent |
| Homeostasis | the stable state of the internal environment when external conditions change dramatically |
| Metabolism | combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up and breaks down material |
| Biosphere | the part of the Earth where life exists including land, water, and air or atmosphere; all forms of life are connected |
| What are the 4 Unifying theories in Biology? | 1. Cell Theory 2. Gene Theory 3. Theory of Heredity 4. Theory of Evolotion |
| Cell Theory | all living things are made up of cells |
| Gene Theory | genes are located on chromosomes and are composed of DNA |
| Theory of Heredity | DNA is passed from one generation to the next-from parent to offspring |
| Theory of Evolution | the core theory and theme of Biology (Both Unity and Diversity of Life on Earth) |
