What is the difference between malignant and benign tumors? Malignant- cancerous, can spread Benign- not cancerous, does not spreas
What is it called wen tumors get bigger? They metastasize.
How many people will die of cancer in the U.S. this year? 500,000
Name some external factors that can cause cancer. chemicals, tobacco, radiation, organisms
Name some internal factors that can cause cancer. genes (DNA), immune system, hormone levels
What can help treat and prevent the cancer-causing factors? Proper diet and exercise.
What are stem cells? Cells that divide o form new cells or replace existing cells.
What does it mean when you say that stem cells are "pluripotent"? They can develop into many types of cells.
What are the two main types of stem cells? Embryonic and adult.
Describe embryonic stem cells. > Formed from fertilization in a lab ("in vitro") > 30 cells can divide to form over 1 million cells > Chromosomes & genes examined as they grow in a culture > The cells can be triggered electrically and by adding growth factors to form certain cells
Describe adult stem cells. > Usually divide into its specific tissue or organ. > Adult stem cells from bone marrow act more like embryonic stem cells. > Can survive a long time inside body until needed. > Some can be triggered into becoming pluripotent.
