| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| cytoskeleton | A network of proteins that constantly change;made up of small protein subunits that crisscross the entire cell |
| vesicle | membrane bound sacs that divide some materials from the rest of the cytoplasm; transport of materials from place to place within the cell |
| nucleus | The storehouse for most of the genetic information or DNA in the cells |
| rough endoplasmic reticulum | Covered with ribosomes; an interconnected network of thin folded membranes with many creases and folds |
| ribosome | Tiny organelles that link amino acids together to form proteins |
| centrosome | A small region of cytoplasm that produces microtubules; important during cell division |
| smooth endoplasmic reticulum | Makes lipids and breaks down drugs and alcohol |
| cell membrane | Forms a boundary between a cell and the outside environment; controls the passage of materials into and out of a cell; has a phospholipid layer |
| Golgi apparatus | Proteins move to here from the endoplasmic reticulum; closely layered stacks of membrane enclosed spaces that process, sort and deliver proteins |
| mitochondrion | Supply energy to the cell; are bean shaped |
| vacuole | Fluid-filled sac used for storage of water, food moleclues, inorganic ions and enzymes for a cell |
