| prophase | the first phase of mitosis; chromosomes become visible, nuclear envelope disappears, spindle forms |
| metaphase | the second phase of mitosis; chromosomes line-up at the equator |
| anaphase | the third phase of mitosis; centromeres divide, chromatids move toward opposite poles |
| telophase | the fourth phase of mitosis; nuclear envelope forms at each pole, chromosomes uncoil, spindle dissolves, cytokinesis begins |
