Introductory terminology and orientation of the body

Anterior In FRONT of; toward the front surface
Posterior In BACK of; toward the back surface
Superior Closer to the HEAD
Inferior Closer to the FEET
Superficial Closer to the SURFACE
Deep FARTHER from the surface
Medial Toward the MID-PLANE of the body
Lateral AWAY from the MID-PLANE of the body
Proximal CLOSEST to the point of ATTACHMENT
Distal FURTHEST from the point of ATTACHMENT
Median (midsagittal) Plane A vertical plane that divides the body into RIGHT and LEFT HALVES
Sagittal plane A vertical plane PARALLEL to the MEDIAN PLANE
Coronal plane A vertical plane that divides the body into ANTERIOR and posterior portions
Transverse Plane A HORIZONTAL plane that dives the body into SUPERIOR AND INFERIOR portions
Thoracic Cavity SUPERIOR to the DIAPHRAGM; Houses the LUNGS and HEART
Abdominopelvic Cavity INFERIOR to the diaphragm; contains major ORGANS of DIGESTION, REPRODUCTION, and the URINARY system
Cranial Cavity Houses the BRAIN
Vertebral Canal Houses the SPINAL CORD
