Introductory terminology and orientation of the body

| Anterior | In FRONT of; toward the front surface |
| Posterior | In BACK of; toward the back surface |
| Superior | Closer to the HEAD |
| Inferior | Closer to the FEET |
| Superficial | Closer to the SURFACE |
| Deep | FARTHER from the surface |
| Medial | Toward the MID-PLANE of the body |
| Lateral | AWAY from the MID-PLANE of the body |
| Proximal | CLOSEST to the point of ATTACHMENT |
| Distal | FURTHEST from the point of ATTACHMENT |
| Median (midsagittal) Plane | A vertical plane that divides the body into RIGHT and LEFT HALVES |
| Sagittal plane | A vertical plane PARALLEL to the MEDIAN PLANE |
| Coronal plane | A vertical plane that divides the body into ANTERIOR and posterior portions |
| Transverse Plane | A HORIZONTAL plane that dives the body into SUPERIOR AND INFERIOR portions |
| Thoracic Cavity | SUPERIOR to the DIAPHRAGM; Houses the LUNGS and HEART |
| Abdominopelvic Cavity | INFERIOR to the diaphragm; contains major ORGANS of DIGESTION, REPRODUCTION, and the URINARY system |
| Cranial Cavity | Houses the BRAIN |
| Vertebral Canal | Houses the SPINAL CORD |
