Biochemistry
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| organic | contains carbon and hydrogen |
| inorganic | does not have carbon and hydrogen |
| lipid | Function-insulation, Building Blocks-fatty acids,& Location- cell membrane |
| nucleic acids | Function-genetic material, Building Blocks- nucleotides, Location-nucleus |
| carbohydrates | Function-energy, Building Bocks-monosaccharide, Location-everywhere in the cell |
| proteins | Function-growth and repair, Building Blocks-amino acids, Location-ribosomes |
| water: polar | positive(+) and negative (-) ends |
| water: universal solvent | dissolves all polar things (ex. food, oxygen) |
| water: density | When water freezes it "grabs" some air molecules. Solid ice floats on liquid water. Less dense as solid example ice floats. *Weird most solids are more dense than liquid. |
| acid | pH 1-6.9 |
| neutral | pH7 |
| base | pH7.1-14 |
| enzyme | protein that makes a cell reaction go faster |
| denature | to destroy protein or enzyme by heat or pH |
| lock and key theory | enzyme fits with one substrate like 1 key fits into 1 lock |
| nucleotides | building block of nucleic acid. Contains sugar, phosphate, and nitrogen base. |
