QuestionAnswer
Why do we Classify? We classify to make communication about organisms easier.
Who Classifies? Everyone and anyone can classify.
Why do Biologists classify? To make communication about organisms easier for them and us.
What did the shoe activity show us about classification? This showed us that classification is a hard process, especially since everyone has their own data and ideas.
What were some of the group names we could not use in the shoe activity? Why? 1.Pretty,Ugly,Cool. 2.We could not use them because they were opinions, not actual data, and everyone has their own opinion.
Why did we always have to agree on a certain group name for everything in the shoe activity? Because, otherwise, without all of us contributing our opinions and observations, there might have been an error in the final classification.
What does a Taxonomic key do? It helps us classify and identify organisms.
How are Taxonomic Keys used? You choose the couplet that best describes your organism, and slowly go down the Taxonomic Key until you find your organism.
How are Taxonomic Keys made?
Why are groups in Taxonomic Keys divided into only two other groups? Because within each group that you go through, you can only choose one of the two options presented, and with more groups, your answer might be inaccurate, as there may be a couple of groups that describe your organism.
What are Couplets? A pair of statements in a Taxonomic Key.
What is Subjective? An opinion, something that has no actual facts to support it, and is able to be debated.
What is Objective? A Fact, something that has actual data to support it.
Why do we have Sub Groups? Sub Groups help us to classify organisms more specifically.
Which Sub Groups are more specific?Which ones are more general? The Sub Groups get more specific as you go down lower, from Kingdom, which is the most broad, to species, which is the most specific.
How do the Sub Groups relate to a Dictionary or a Phone Book? In a dictionary or Phone Book, the whole book is a Kingdom.
What happens when you go up or down levels in the Sub Groups? When you go up, the groups get more general, and when you go down, the groups get more specific.
Where do Scientific names come from? From Latin.
Why do we have Scientific names? They help us communicate about organisms, as the common name for organisms changes throughout different areas, and the Scientific name never changes.
What is a common name? The name of an organism that changes throughout different time periods and regions.
What can a Scientific name tell us?
What do you know about Acer Rubrum? 1.It is an organism. 2.It is a classified organism. 3.It has a habitat. 4.It is either alive or dead. 5.It can move.
Why did we go through the story of Mt.Lion? It showed us that there are different common names for the same organism, and that we should just use the Scientific name to avoid confusion.
What is another name for Linneaus's system? Binomial Nomenclature(the two-name naming system).
What are Some similarities and differences between Aristotle and Linneaus's systems?
How were the names of the organisms different in both of the systems? Aristotles system had very long complicated names, while Linneaus's system had names made up of two parts:the Genus and the Species name.
What did the story of the Bee's show us? That if we had to say Aristotles name for the Bee every time we talked about it, it would get very annoying.
Which of the systems was cumbersome? Why? Aristotles system. Because the names in his system were too long and specific, and it would have taken a long, long time to learn how to pronounce and say everything.
Which of the systems was better? Linneaus's. Because all you have to knowis the genus and the species name for the organism, and then you know the fll name for the organism. The names are also shorter and easier to remember.
What are some differences and between Prokaryotes and Eukryotes? Prokaryotes are single celled and do not have a nucleus, while Eukaryotes are multicellular and have a nucleus.
What are some similarities between Archaea and Bacteria?
What are some differences between Archaea and Bacteria?
