| Term | Definition |

| Layouts | Determine how content is positioned on a slide. |
| Placeholder | Boxes with dotted (hash-marked) borders that are displayed when a new slide is created. |
| Normal View | Default view in PowerPoint. Consists of 3 working areas- the Tabs pane, Slides pane, and Notes pane. |
| Slides Tab | Tab pane on the left side of the screen that displays a thumbnail view of the slides. |
| Outline Tab | Tab pane on the left side of the screen that displays only text contained in the slides. |
| Slide Pane | Shows a large view of the current slide on the right side of the window. |
| Notes Pane | Area where notes and additional information can be typed at the bottom of your screen, not visible during the slide show. |
| Splitter Bar | Used to adjust the width of the Slide pane when dragged with the height of the Notes pane border. |
| Live Preview | Feature that allows you to point to a gallery choice and see its effect in the document window. |
| Line Wraps | Text that exceeds the width of the placeholder is dropped to the next line. |
| Paragraph | A segment of text with the same format that begins when you press the ENTER key and ends when ENTER is pressed again. |
| Level | A position within a structure (e.g. an outline) that indicates the magnitude of importance. PowerPoint allows 5. |
| Demoting | Creating a lower level paragraph. |
