Genetics
Chapter 6 Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Gene | Segment of DNA, location on chromosome |
| Phenotype | Physical appearance determined by genotype. |
| Allele | Any of the alternative forms of a gene that occurs at a specific place on a chromosome |
| Trait | Characteristic that is inherited. |
| Chromosome | Long, continuous thread of DNA that consists of numerous genes an regulatory information. |
| DNA | Molecule that stores genetic information in al organisms |
| Heterozygous | Characteristic of having two different alleles that appear at the same locus of sister chromatids |
| Recessive | Allele that is not expressed unless two copies are present in an organisms genotype |
| Cross | Mating of two organisms |
| Dihybrid | Cross, or mating, between organisms involving two pairs of contrasting traits |
| Dominant | Allele that is expressed when two different alleles are present in an organisms genotype |
| Genotype | Collection of all of an organisms genetic information that codes for traits |
| Homozygous | Characteristic of having two of the same alleles at the same locus of sister chromatids |
| Monohybrid | Cross, or mating, between organisms that involves only one pair of contrasting traits |
| Genome | All of an organisms genetic material |
| Purebred | Type of organism whose ancestors are genetically uniform |
| Phenotype | Collection of all of an organisms physical characteristics |
| Homologous chromosome | Chromosomes that have the same length, appearance , and copies of genes, although the alleles may differ |
| Incomplete dominance | Heterozygous phenotype that is a blend of the two homozygous phenotypes |
| Codominance | Heterozygous genotype that equally expresses the traits from both alleles |
| Carrier | Organism whose genome contains a gene for a certain trait or disease that is not expressed in the organisms phenotype |
| Sex-linked gene | Gene that is located on a sex chromosome |
| Polygenic trait | Trait that is produced by two or more genes |
| Epistasis | A gene that interferes with the expression of other genes |
| Pedigree | Chart of the phenotypes and genotype in a family that is used to determine whether an individual is a carrier of a recessive allele |
| Karyotype | Image of all of the chromosomes in a cell |
| Law of segregation | Each gamete has 1 copy of each gene |
| Law of independent assortment | Genes travel separately |
