Chapter 18
Conservation, Pollution and waste management
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Conservation | The protection and careful management of our natural resources |
| How are humans endangering nature? | -agricultural practices. -habitats are destroyed. -insecticides. -over-fishing |
| What can we do ? | -industries have to consider the environment before planning. -breeding programmes. -conservation groups. -country code |
| Pollution | The addition of harmful substances to the environment |
| (I) air pollution | The burning of fossil fuels result in harmful gasses which act as pollutants of the air |
| (II) water pollution | When harmful substances are being dumped into lakes, rivers and seas |
| Algal boom | When chemicals with high mineral content are washed into our waterways it causes the sudden growth of microscopic algae. When the algae dies the dead bacteria uses up all the oxygen preventing fish and other animals from living under water |
| (III) soil pollution | Soil is polluted when pesticides and excess fertilisers get into soil |
| Waste management | How we deal with our waste ( landfill sites, incinerators and recycling |
| Landfill sites (advantages and disadvantages) | Advantages-1.they are convenient. 2.the methane gas produced can be used as an energy source. Disadvantages-1.attracts vermin. 2.poisonous chemicals seep into the ground. 3.they use to much area |
| Incineration (advantages and disadvantages) | Advantages-1.can deal with large amounts of waste. 2.clean and efficient way of dealing with waste. 3.does not take up a large amount of space. Disadvantages-1.creates large quantities of ash. 2.produces poisonous fumes |
| Recycling (advantages and disadvantages) | Advantages-1.it is environmental friendly 2.saves money and energy. Disadvantages-1.some materials may not be reusable |
| Waste manage man pyramid | (From top to bottom) prevent, reduce, re-use, recycle, energy recovery, disposal |
| How human activities affect the environment (positively) | 1.protecting habitats. 2.anti-pollution and waste management laws |
| How human activities affect the environment (negatively) | 1.destroying habitats. 2.burning fossils fuels contributes to global warming |
