| Anabolism | Chemical reactions where smaller molecules are joined together to form larger molecules |
| Catabolism | Chemical reactions where larger molecules are broken down to smaller molecules |
| Trace element | Minerals required in very small amounts by organisms but essential for normal growth and development. |
| Amino acid | Structural unit of proteins containing an amino group. |
| Fatty acid | Component of lipids. |
| Glycogen | A storage polysaccharide found in animal cells only, e.g. muscles, liver and brain. |
| Triglyceride | The smallest lipid consisting of three fatty acid and one glycerol molecule. |
| Vitamin | An essential organic catalyst of metabolism. Needed in small amounts. E.g. water-soluble, e.g. vitamin B, vitamin C, and fat-soluble, e.g. vitamin A, vitamin D. |
| Cellulose | A complex carbohydrate or polysaccharide forming the cell walls of plant cells. It is made from chains of glucose molecules. |
| Mineral | An inorganic compound needed in small quantities for the correct functioning of the body, or an organism e.g. calcium in bones. |
