Basic endangered species vocabulary

Biodiversity hotspot A location with high biodiversity The Siberian Forest
Keystone Species A species that, through its food web, is related to many species Siberian tigers
Umbrella Species When one species is protected, the measures taken help to protect several other species. Siberian tigers
Range The area in which a particular species lives. For Siberian tigers, it's a narrow strip of mountains along the Sea of Japan
Endangered A species at risk of extinction Siberian tigers
Threatened A species at risk of becoming endangered Many other large cats
Poaching The act of illegally hunting an endangered animal People who hunt Siberian tigers for their fur
CITES treaty A treaty that protects endangered species All confiscated Siberian tiger pelts are burned to keep them from getting to the market.
Habitat fragmentation When a species's habitat is cut into pieces due to deforestation Th Siberian Forest is being fragmented by logging companies
