Ectothermic Vertebrates

gills exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen in fish
internal fertilization when the eggs are fertilized on the inside of the female's body.
external fertilization fertilizing the egg with sperm outside the female's body
spawning when female fish lays eggs and the male fish sprays sperm over the eggs.
swim bladder air sac that allows the fish to sink or float upward in the water
jawless fish lampreys and hagfish that have a round mouth & have tubelike bodies made of cartilage.
jawed cartilaginous fish sharks, skates & rays that have jaws but their endoskeleton is made of cartilage.
bony fish make up 95% of all fish and have bones.
lobe-finned fish type of bony fish that have fleshy, lobe-like fins.
lungfish fish that have gills and one lung to live in shallow water
ray-finned fish make up most bony fish with long thin bones covered fins
hibernation a period of inactivity during cold weather.
estivation a period of inactivity during hot dry weather.
amphibians ectothermic animals with wet smooth skin includes frogs, toads, & salamanders; means "double life"
reptiles ectothermic animals with lungs dry scaly skin; includes turtles, snakes, alligators & lizards
amniotic egg hard shelled eggs that are laid on land and all the embryo to develop.
alligator have a broad, flat snout with a rounded end
crocodiles have a narrow,pointed snout
gavials have a slender with a bulb-type growth at the end.
