Ecology Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Population A group of the same species living in the same area
Abiotic factors Parts of the environment that are non-living (not dead, just never alive)
carnivor Consumer that gains energy from eating only animals
Community Multiple populations that inhabit the same location at the same time
Food web A group of interlocking food chains that show multiple directions of energy flow.
Biotic factors Parts of the environment that are living (or were once living)
Omnivore Organism that gains energy from both plants and animals
Ecology The study of relationships between organisms and between organisms and their environment
Ecosystem A community interacting with the abiotic parts of its environment.
Predator An organism that feeds on another organism
Environment The surroundings or conditions in which organisms live or operate
Niche The job or role of an organism
Prey An organism that is fed on by another organism
