What is the digestive role of the liver? -makes bile which emulsifies fat. -stores nutrients -makes sodium hydrogen carbonate to neutralise acid
what is mechanical digestion? This is the physical break down of food for eg: by teeth
What is chemical digestion? The br4eakdown of food using enzymes eg: amylase digests starch into maltose
What is meant by the term egestion? This is the removal of unabsorbed material from the digestive system
What are incisors? chisel shaped teeth with sharp edges for cutting, slicing or biting.
What is peristalsis? It is a wave of muscular action that forces food through the intestines.
what is the main location where digestion takes place and why? Duodenum as it makes a range of digestive enzymes.
what is the function of the colon? -it reabsorbes water from the waste forming feaces -symbiotic bacteria in colon make vitamins and digest cellulose
what are4 symbiotic bacteria? bacteria that obtain food from humans and provide useful vitamins in return.
where is bile made and stored? bile is made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder.
what are the functions of bile? -imulsifies lipids which increases the surface area for enzyme digestion -neutralises acid chyme from stomach
name 2 adaptations of the small intestine for absorbing food. -it has many villi and microvilli -it is very long
