Viruses, Bacteria, Protists, and Fungi

| host | organism that provides a source of energy for a virus or another organism |
| parasite | an organism that lives or on a host and causes it harm |
| virus | a tiny non living particle that enters and then reproduces inside a cell |
| vaccine | a substance introduced in the body to help produce chemicals that destroy specific viruses |
| bacteria | single cell organisms that lack a nucleus - prokaryotes |
| cytoplasm | a gel-like fluid that moves structures throughout the cell |
| ribosome | chemical factories where proteins are produced |
| flagellum | a long whip like structure that helps a cell move |
| cellular respiration | the process of breaking down food to release energy |
| binary fission | one cell divides to form two identical cells |
| conjugation | a form of sexual reproduction in which a unicellular organism transfers some of is genetic material to another unicellular organism |
| endospore | a small rounded thick walled resting cell that forms inside a bacterial cell to protect it in harsh conditions |
| pasteurization | the act of heating food to a temperature that is high enough to kill most harmful bacteria |
| decomposers | organisms that break down large complex chemicals in dead organisms |
| protists | eukaryotes that cannot be classified as animals, plants or fungi |
| protozoan | a unicellular animal like protist |
| pseudopod | a "false foot" or temporary bulge of cytoplasm used for feeding and movement in some protozoans |
