Viruses Azmin Mcdaniels
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| virus | a non-living particle made up of nucleic acid and a protein coat or nucleic acid and a lipid-protein (lipoprotein)coat. |
| capsid | a protein coat thats the only layer surrounding some viruses. |
| envelope | bilipid membrane that surrounds the capsid. |
| provirus | dna of other dna viruses that inserts into the hosts cells chromosomes. |
| retrovirus | a virus that contains single tranded rna and produces a reverse transcriptase. |
| reverse transcriptase | an enzyme that catalyze the information of dna from an rna template. |
| bacteriophage | a virus that infects bacteria. |
| lytic cycle | a method of virus replication that result in the destruction of a host cell and release of many new virus particles. |
| virulent | describes microorganisms that causes disease and that is highly infectous, refers only to virus that reproduce by lytic cycle. |
| lysis | the disintergration of a cell disruption of the plasma membrane. |
| lysogenic cycle | a method of viral genome is replicated as a provirus without destroying hte host cell. |
| temperate virus | a virus who replication includes the lysogenic cycle. |
| prophage | the viral genome of a bacterophage that has entered a bacterial cell has become attached to the bacterial chromosome and is replicated with the host bacterium's dna |
