Advantages of transdermal patch? Effective, reversible, makes periods more regular, decreases cramps
Disadvantages of transdermal patch? Side effects, skin irritation, doesn't prevent STDs
Emergency Contraceptive pill - how it works Prevents egg from implanting itself in uterus
Advantages of emergency contraceptive pill? Can prevent unwanted pregnancy, non-prescription
Disadvantages of emergency contraceptive pill? Must be taken within 3 days, not form of prevention, emergency
Male condom - how it works Physical barrier, prevents direct genital contact
Advantages of male condom? No prescription, protects against STDs, may prevent premature ejaculation
Disadvantages of male condom? Can break or slip
Diaphragm - how it works Blocks entry to uterus
Advantages of diaphragm? No hormones, prevents against some STIs
Disadvantages of diaphragm? Requires proper insertion technique, does not prevent against other STIs
Vasectomy- how it works Vas deferens is cut, no sperm is released in semen, so egg cannot be fertilized
Advantages of vasectomy? Does not interfere with intercourse, no long term side effects
Disadvantages of vasectomy? Permanent, short term surgery side effects
Spermicide - how it works Disables sperm inserted in vagina
Advantages of spermicide? Doesn't contain hormones, can be used if you smoke or breastfeed, provides lubrication
Disadvantages of spermicide? Does not prevent STIs, some people may be allergic to spermicide, irritation
Bacterial STD examples? Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis
Are bacterial STDs curable? Yes
Viral STD examples? Hepatitis B, genital herpes, genital warts
Which STD's are transmitted by body fluid? HIV
Which STD's are transmitted by skin to skin contact? Pubic lice, HPV, syphilis, herpes, hepatitis B, HIV
This STD has symptoms of stinging, itching blisters or sore in the genital area. Chlamydia
Similarities between chlamydia and gonorrhoea? Unprotected sex, mother to infant at birth, usually no symptoms, genital discharge + pain
Differences between chlamydia and gonorrhoea? Chlamydia causes inflammation
PID? Pelvic inflammatory disease
Symptoms of HIV/AIDs? Often none, sometimes weight loss, fatigue, flu symptoms
Are viral STDs curable? Not curable, but symptoms are treatable
