Genetics
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| gene | factors that control a trait |
| alleles | different forms of a gene (T, t, or B, b) |
| purebred/homozygous | 2 of the same alleles (TT, tt, BB, bb, etc.) |
| hybrid/heterozygous | 2 different alleles (Tt, Bb, etc.) |
| dominant allele | always shows up in the organism when the allele is present (capital letter) |
| recessive allele | is hidden when the dominant allele is present (lowercase letter) |
| heredity | passing of physical characteristics from parents to offspring |
| trait | each different form of a characteristic (height, eye color, etc.) |
| fertilization | joining of egg and sperm |
| phenotype | physical appearance or visible traits (tall, brown eyes, etc.) |
| genotype | genetic makeup or allele combinations (Tt, TT, tt, etc.) |
| codominance (incomplete dominance) | not dominant or recessive—both alleles are expressed (BW=blue, not black or white) |
| adenine | matches with thymine in DNA |
| cytocine | matches with guanine in DNA |
| uracil | in RNA instead of thymine |
| messenger RNA | copies DNA in the nucleus then moves to the cytoplasm in protein synthesis |
| transfer RNA | carries amino acids to the ribosome to add them to the protein in protein synthesis |
