Chap 6 - DNA
DNA Structure and Function
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| DNA | Deoxyribonucleic Acid; a molecule that is present in ALL living cells and that contains the information that determines the traits that a living thing inherits and needs to live |
| Nucleotide | in a nucleic-acid chain, a subunit that consists of a phosphate, a sugar, and a nitrogenous base |
| Chargaff's Rule | The amount of cytosine in DNA is equal to the amount of guanine. (And the amount of thymine is equal to the amount of adenine) |
| Double Helix | The structure of DNA |
| RNA | Ribonucleic Acid; a molecule that is present in all living cells and that plays a role in protein production |
| Ribosome | a cell organelle composed of RNA and prtein; the site of protein synthesis |
| Mutations | a change in the nucleotide-base sequence of a gene or DNA molecule |
| The three types of mutations | substitution, insertion, deletion |
| Genetic Engineering | Manipulating individual genes within organisms |
