Unit 2

TermDefinition
DNA A molecule that contains the information that determines the traits that a living thing needs to live.
Chromosomes One of the structures in the nucleus that are made up of DNA and protein.
Cell cycle The life cycle of a cell.
interphase the part of the cell cycle in which the cell is not dividing.
mitosis the part in the cell cycle in which the nucleus divides.
cytokinesis the division of the parent cells cytoplasm.
homologous chromosomes chromosomes that have the same sequence of genes and the same structure.
meiosis the type of cell division that produces haploid sex cells such as eggs and sperm cells.
asexual reproduction one organism produces one or more new organisms identical to itself.
sexual reproduction two parents each contribute a sex cell to the new organism.
fertilization a sperm cell and an egg joins together.
heredity the passing of genetic material from parent to offspring
