| DNA | A molecule that contains the information that determines the traits that a living thing needs to live. |
| Chromosomes | One of the structures in the nucleus that are made up of DNA and protein. |
| Cell cycle | The life cycle of a cell. |
| interphase | the part of the cell cycle in which the cell is not dividing. |
| mitosis | the part in the cell cycle in which the nucleus divides. |
| cytokinesis | the division of the parent cells cytoplasm. |
| homologous chromosomes | chromosomes that have the same sequence of genes and the same structure. |
| meiosis | the type of cell division that produces haploid sex cells such as eggs and sperm cells. |
| asexual reproduction | one organism produces one or more new organisms identical to itself. |
| sexual reproduction | two parents each contribute a sex cell to the new organism. |
| fertilization | a sperm cell and an egg joins together. |
| heredity | the passing of genetic material from parent to offspring |
