TermDefinition
Classification The grouping of objects or information based on similarities.
Taxonomy The branch of biology that groups and names organisms based on studies of their different characteristics.
Binomial nomenclature Two-word system developed by Linnaeus to name species.
Genus First word of a two-part scientific name used to identify a group of similar species.
Specific epithet The second word of a species name.
Family A taxon of similar genus.
Order A taxon of similar families.
Class A taxon of similar orders.
Phylum A taxon of similar classes.
Division Taxonomic grouping of similar classes; term used instead of phyla by plant taxonomists.
Kingdom A taxon of similar phyla or divisions.
Archaebacteria Prokaryotes that live in harsh areas like hot springs/ swamps.
Eubacteria Prokaryotes with strong cell walls.
Protists Eukaryotes that lack complex organ systems and live in wet areas.
Fungi Uni/ multicellular eukaryotes that absorbs nutrients from organic matter.
Plants Multicellular, photosynthetic, eukaryotic organisms
Animals Multicellular heterotrophs.
