Taxonomy Branch of biology that groups and names organisms based on studies of their different characteristics
Binomial Nomenclature Two word naming system used by modern classification systems
Genus A group of similar species
Specific Epithet A characteristic of the organism
Family Taxon that consists of a group of similar genera
Order Taxon of similar families
Class Taxon of similar orders
Phylum Taxon of similar classes
Division The Phylum taxon used for plants
Kingdom A taxon of similar phyla or divisions
Archaebacteria Prokaryotes that live in harsh areas like hot springs/swamps
Eubacteria Prokaryotes with strong cell walls
Protists Eukaryotes that lack complex organ systems and live in wet areas
Fungi Uni/multicellular eukaryote that absorbs nutrients from organic matter
Plants Multicellular, photosynthetic, eukaryotic organisms
Animals Multicellular heterotrophs have developed nervous systems
