Autotroph Make their own food
Heterotroph Obtain energy from the foods they consume.
Adenosine Triphosphate One of the principal chemical compounds that cells use to store and release energy.
Photosynthesis Use the energy of sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into high energy carbohydrates sugars and starches and oxygen a waste product.
Pigment Plants gather the sun's energy with light absorbing molecules.
Chlorophyll A green pigment, present in all green plants and in cyanobacteria, responsible for the absorption of light to provide energy for photosynthesis. Its molecule contains a magnesium atom held in a porphyrin ring.
Thylakoid Chloroplasts contain saclike photosynthetic membranes.
Photosystem Proteins in the thylakoid membrane organize chlorophyll and other pigments into clusters.
Stroma Region outside the thylakoid membranes.
NADP+ Carrier molecules is a compound.
Light Dependent Reactions Why plants need light to grow. Uses energy from light to produce ATP and NADPH.
ATP Synthease Membrane contains a protein that spans the membrane and allows H+ ions to pass through it.
Calvin Cycle Uses ATP and NADPH from the light dependent reactions to produce high energy sugars.
