terms and functions of both the endocrine and nervous system components

neurons a long cell (body, dendrites, axon) that relays messages
central nervous system brain and spinal cord and coordinates all of your body's activities
peripheral nervous system all the nerves that carry messages to and from the central nervous system
cerebrum two halves (hemispheres) of the brain (big part) connected by nerve bundles
cerebellum blob at the back of the brain controlling balance, posture, and coordination
reflex an automatic response to stimulus
taste buds chemical sensory receptors on your tongue
retina a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye, made up of light receptors and sensory neorons
cochlea snail-shaped structure containing fluid that detects movement
endocrine glands a series of glands that release chemicals into bloodstream
pituitary gland the main gland of the endocrine system, controlled by hypothalamus, releases chemicals and causes other glands to release chemicals
adrenal gland inner and outer portions located on top of kidneys; outer: secretes steroid hormones, inner: secretes amino acid hormones
thyroid gland in neck; controls metabolism, growth, and development; secretes calcitonin
Endocrine System controls emotions, growth and development, tissue function, metabolism, sexual function, reproduction; works closely with the nervous system
hormones chemicals that transfer messages from sets of cells to other sets of cells; certain cells depending on purpose in hormone
brain, spinal cord what The central nervous system consists of
islets of langerhans glands inside the pancreas which secrete insulin and glucagon
insulin regulates sugar levels
thyroid secretes thyroxine that controls metabolism
parathyroids secretes hormones that control blood calcium levels
adrenals secretes adrenealin to help body handle stress
panreas secretes insulin
testes secretes male sex hormones and sperm cells for reproduction
ovaries secrete female sex hormones and produces eggs for reproduction
uterus houses a fertilized egg cell (immature human life) as it develops
pituitary secretes hormones which help control endocrine system and helps regulate body's water balance
