---|---|
neurons | a long cell (body, dendrites, axon) that relays messages |
central nervous system | brain and spinal cord and coordinates all of your body's activities |
peripheral nervous system | all the nerves that carry messages to and from the central nervous system |
cerebrum | two halves (hemispheres) of the brain (big part) connected by nerve bundles |
cerebellum | blob at the back of the brain controlling balance, posture, and coordination |
reflex | an automatic response to stimulus |
taste buds | chemical sensory receptors on your tongue |
retina | a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye, made up of light receptors and sensory neorons |
cochlea | snail-shaped structure containing fluid that detects movement |
endocrine glands | a series of glands that release chemicals into bloodstream |
pituitary gland | the main gland of the endocrine system, controlled by hypothalamus, releases chemicals and causes other glands to release chemicals |
adrenal gland | inner and outer portions located on top of kidneys; outer: secretes steroid hormones, inner: secretes amino acid hormones |
thyroid gland | in neck; controls metabolism, growth, and development; secretes calcitonin |
Endocrine System | controls emotions, growth and development, tissue function, metabolism, sexual function, reproduction; works closely with the nervous system |
hormones | chemicals that transfer messages from sets of cells to other sets of cells; certain cells depending on purpose in hormone |
brain, spinal cord | what The central nervous system consists of |
islets of langerhans | glands inside the pancreas which secrete insulin and glucagon |
insulin | regulates sugar levels |
thyroid | secretes thyroxine that controls metabolism |
parathyroids | secretes hormones that control blood calcium levels |
adrenals | secretes adrenealin to help body handle stress |
panreas | secretes insulin |
testes | secretes male sex hormones and sperm cells for reproduction |
ovaries | secrete female sex hormones and produces eggs for reproduction |
uterus | houses a fertilized egg cell (immature human life) as it develops |
pituitary | secretes hormones which help control endocrine system and helps regulate body's water balance |
