| anterior | nearer to or toward the front |
| posterior | nearer to or toward the back |
| ventral | belly side |
| dorsal | directed toward or situated on the back side |
| medial | middle or nearer the middle |
| lateral | farther from the midline of the body |
| superior | uppermost or above |
| inferior | lowermost or below |
| proximal | nearer the origin or point of attachment |
| distal | far or distant from the origin or point of attachment |
| caudal | in an inferior position |
| cephalad | toward the head |
| anatomic planes | imaginary flat surfaces that are used to aid in visualizing spatial relationships of internal body parts |
| frontal plane | divides the body into front and back portions; also called the coronal plane |
| transverse plane | divides the body into upper and lower portions. |
| midsagittal plane | divides the body into right and left portions |
