Binomial Nomenclature A naming system used to identify species
Class Taxon of similar orders
Classification The grouping of objects or information based on similarities
Division Plant taxonomists use divisions instead of phylum
Family Next largest taxon in the biological classification system
Genus A group of similar species
Kingdom A taxon of similar phyla or divisions
Order Taxon of similar families
Phylum Taxon of similar classes
Specific Epithet Sometimes describes a characteristic of the organism
Taxonomy Branch of biology that groups and names organisms based on studies of their different characteristics
Cladistics Biological system of classification that is based on phylogeny
Cladogram A branching diagram that biologists use to identify a groups derived traits
Eubacteria Very strong cell walls, and a less complex genetic makeup
Fungus Unicellular or multicellular eukaryote that absorbs nutrients
Phylogeny Evolutionary history of a sepcies
Protist Eukaryote that lacks complex organ systems
