What 4 things are added to the reaction tube at the beginning of PCR? DNA sample, DNA polymerase, DNA primers with fluorescent markers, nucleotides
What does PCR stand for? Polymerase chain reaction
What is the function of PCR? To amplify tiny samples of DNA so that they are large enough to be analysed
What are DNA primers? Short DNA sequences complementary to the DNA adjacent to the STR
What happens during the first stage of PCR? The DNA strands separate
What happens during the second stage of PCR? The primers attach to the start of the STRs
What happens during the third stage of PCR? DNA polymerases attach, and nucleotides extend the DNA from the primers. The STRs and DNA adjacent is replicated
After how many cycles are there fragments produced that only contain the STRs? 2
