Description of disorders

TermDefinition
Addison's Disease Hyposecretion. Destruction of adrenal glands. Unable to respond to ACTH. Muscular weakness, weight loss, loss of appetite, body can't deal with stresses, etc. Mild infection/injury can lead to sharp/fatal decline in blood pressure.
Cretinism Hyposecretion of Thyroid hormones. During fetal/infancy. Dwafism, mental retardation, yellow skin, retarded sexual development.
Cushing's Disease Hypersecretion of adrenal cortex. Disturbed carb/fat/protein metabolism & increased blood volume/pressure. "moon" face, obesity of trunk(not distal limbs), hyperclycemia, hypertension, osteoporosis, muscular weakness, psychological disturbances.
Diabetes Mellitus Pancreas. Failure to secrete insulin. Blood glucose not converted to glycogen, remains in blood. Some glucose in urine. Type I(insulin-dependent/child) II(non-insulin dependent/adult)
Diabetes Insipidus Pituitary gland. Failure to secrete ADH. Extremely dilute urine, dehydration.
Pituitary Dwarfism Deficiency of growth hormone. Retarded growth/development.
Gigantism Disorder of children. Hyperfunction of pituitary gland. Excess height(due to horomone-secreting tumor of gland.
Grave's Disease Hypersecretion of Thyroid. Lack of normal feedback controls. Enlargement of thyroid(goiter) & exophthalmos (protruding eyes).
Hyperparathyroidism Not common. accidental removal of parathyroid glands during surgery. muscle tetany.
Hypoglycemia Decreased blood glucose levels. Stimulates secretion (epinephrine/glucogen/hGH). Sweating, anxiety, tremor/increased heart rate, hunger, weakness.
Myxedema Hypothyroid. Metabolic slowing. Bloated face, thickened/dry skin, sparse/coarse hair, muscular weakness, mental lethargy, cold intolerance, hoarseness.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Hyposecretion of melatonin (lack of sunlight). mood swings, irritability, sleepiness, anxiety, insatiable appetite, socially withdrawn. Phototherapy can reverse symptoms.
Virilism Over production of adrenal sex hormones. Females w/ excess male hormones & males w/ excess female hormone production.
