Disorders
Description of disorders
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Addison's Disease | Hyposecretion. Destruction of adrenal glands. Unable to respond to ACTH. Muscular weakness, weight loss, loss of appetite, body can't deal with stresses, etc. Mild infection/injury can lead to sharp/fatal decline in blood pressure. |
| Cretinism | Hyposecretion of Thyroid hormones. During fetal/infancy. Dwafism, mental retardation, yellow skin, retarded sexual development. |
| Cushing's Disease | Hypersecretion of adrenal cortex. Disturbed carb/fat/protein metabolism & increased blood volume/pressure. "moon" face, obesity of trunk(not distal limbs), hyperclycemia, hypertension, osteoporosis, muscular weakness, psychological disturbances. |
| Diabetes Mellitus | Pancreas. Failure to secrete insulin. Blood glucose not converted to glycogen, remains in blood. Some glucose in urine. Type I(insulin-dependent/child) II(non-insulin dependent/adult) |
| Diabetes Insipidus | Pituitary gland. Failure to secrete ADH. Extremely dilute urine, dehydration. |
| Pituitary Dwarfism | Deficiency of growth hormone. Retarded growth/development. |
| Gigantism | Disorder of children. Hyperfunction of pituitary gland. Excess height(due to horomone-secreting tumor of gland. |
| Grave's Disease | Hypersecretion of Thyroid. Lack of normal feedback controls. Enlargement of thyroid(goiter) & exophthalmos (protruding eyes). |
| Hyperparathyroidism | Not common. accidental removal of parathyroid glands during surgery. muscle tetany. |
| Hypoglycemia | Decreased blood glucose levels. Stimulates secretion (epinephrine/glucogen/hGH). Sweating, anxiety, tremor/increased heart rate, hunger, weakness. |
| Myxedema | Hypothyroid. Metabolic slowing. Bloated face, thickened/dry skin, sparse/coarse hair, muscular weakness, mental lethargy, cold intolerance, hoarseness. |
| Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) | Hyposecretion of melatonin (lack of sunlight). mood swings, irritability, sleepiness, anxiety, insatiable appetite, socially withdrawn. Phototherapy can reverse symptoms. |
| Virilism | Over production of adrenal sex hormones. Females w/ excess male hormones & males w/ excess female hormone production. |
