Cell & Body Systems
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell | Make up all living things, they are microscopic. |
| Organelles | Organelles perform specific functions inside the cell. |
| Cell Membrane | A thin and flexible covering that allows food, water, and gases to enter the cell. It also allows wastes to leave. |
| Cell Wall | The cell wall is found only in plant cells and gives the plant a rigid outer layer that protects it and allows it to stand up. |
| Cytoplasm | Cytoplasm is a fluid that all of the organelles are suspended in. |
| Ribosomes | Ribosomes are scattered through the cell and assemble proteins. |
| Lysosomes | Lysosomes are like the stomach, they break down nutrients and old cell parts. |
| Vacuoles | Vacuoles are membranes that store food, water, and waste. |
| Golgi Apparatus | The golgi apparatus receives and processes proteins for shipment. |
| Chloroplasts | Chloroplasts are found only in plant cells, they absorb sunlight and help make the plants food through the process of photosynthesis. |
| Mitochondria | The mitochondrian are the 'power plants' of the cell. They break down sugars and release energy to the cell. |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | The endoplasmic reticulum is a system of passageways that allow materials to pass through the cell. |
| Tissue | Tissue is a group of cells that are specialized |
| Organ | Organs are a group of tissues that perform a specific function. |
| Organ Systems | Organs that work together performing a specific function for the body. |
