Terms for Genes

Biology

TermDefinition
Allele What is representing a gene, as in a letter.
Dominant A gene that is over powering.
Fertilization When an organism is able to produce an offspring.
Gamete A male cell or a female cell that can come together to form an offspring.
Genetics The study of heredity.
Genotype An organisms genetic make up.
Heredity The study of variation in organisms.
Heterozygous When a genetic pair is two different alleles.
Homozygous When a genetic pair has the same alleles.
Hybrid Another term for Heterozygous.
Law of Independent Assortment Genes for different traits are inherited independently of each other.
Law of Segregation Every individual has two alleles of each gene and when gametes are produced, each gamete receives one of these alleles.
Phenotype How something physically looks.
Pollination When a flower fertilizes.
Recessive An allele that is always non-important and is overtaken.
Trait An organisms characteristics.
Zygote A fertilized organism.
