Types of Cells
Unit 3: Cells
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Plants | Kingdom of life that contains multicellular, photosynthetic eukaryotic organisms (ex: cacti and flowering plants) |
Animals | Kingdom of life that includes you and other multicellular eukaryotic organisms (ex:insects and fish) |
Bacteria | Kingdom of life that contains unicellular prokaryotic organisms. |
Multicellular | Composed of more than one cell. |
Unicellular | Composed of just one cell. |
Eukaryote | A type of cell found in everything except bacteria. These cells are large and complex, and have membrane-bound organelles like a nucleus. Many are multicellular. |
Prokaryote | A type of cell. These cells are simple and small, and have non membrane-bound organelles. They are unicellular, and are only found in bacteria. |
Protists | Kingdom of life that contains unicellular eukaryotic organisms (ex: amoeba and algae). |
Fungi | Kingdom of life that contain multicellular eukaryotic organisms (ex: mushrooms and molds) |
Nucleus | A membrane-bound organelle that is the control center (brain) of the cell. |
Membrane-Bound Organelles | Organelles that are surrounded by a membrane which allows them to participate in complex processes simultaneously (ex: mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum). |
