What is the peritoneum? A serous membrane of the abdominal cavity. The visceral covers the external surface of most digestive organs while the parietal lines the body wall.
What is the mesentery? A double layer of peritoneum that provides (1) vascular and nerve supplies to the viscera. (2) Holds digestive organs in place and stores fat
What is hepatic portal circulation? A way to collect nutrient-rich venous blood from the digestive viscera. It delivers it to the liver for metabolic processing and storage.
Describe the liver. It is the largest gland in the body. It has 4 lobes. Bile leaves the liver via bile ducts made of the common hepatic duct and cystic duct.
What are the functions of hepatocytes? 1) produce bile 2) Process bloodborne nutrients 3) store fat-soluble vitamins 4) detoxification
What do bile salts do? These cholesterol derivatives (1) emulsify fat, (2) facilitate fat and cholesterol absorption, (3) help solubilize cholesterol
