| zone of saturation | groundwater completely fills all the pores of a material |
| water table | upper boundary of the zone of saturation |
| zone of aeration | above the water table, materials are moist, but they are not saturated with water, air occupies much of the pores |
| permeability | tendency of a material to let water pass through |
| aquifer | groundwater flows through permeable sediment and rock |
| spring | natural discharge of groundwater |
| hot spring | have a temperature higher than that of human body |
| geyser | explosive hot springs |
| cave | natural underground opening with a connection to Earth's surface |
| sinkhole | depression in the ground caused by the collapse of a cave |
| karst topography | regions that have sinkholes and disappearing streams |
| stalactite | hang from the caves ceiling |
| stalagmite | come up from the ground |
| well | holes dug or drilled into the ground to reach an aquifer |
| drawdown | difference between the original water table level and the water level in the pumped well |
| recharge | water from precipitation replenishes the water content of an aquifer |
| artesian well | aquifer can spurt above the land surface in the form of a fountian |
| aquicludes | impermeable layers, barriers to groundwater |
