Cell Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Interphase | Chromosomes are copied. |
| Prophase | The cell prepares for mitosis. |
| Metaphase | The chromosomes meet in the middle of the cell. |
| Anaphase | The chromosomes draw apart to opposite sides of the cell. |
| Telophase | Two identical nuclei are formed. |
| Cytokinesis | Cytoplasm pinches in to form two identical daughter cell |
| Active Transport | Movement across a cell membrane that requires energy. Molecules move from low concentration (less crowded) to high concentration areas (more crowded). |
| Cell Transport | When molecules are equally spread out and they move at equal rates in and out of the cell. |
| Diffusion | The movement of molecules (liquid or gas) from an area of high concenration (more crowded) to an area of lower concentration (less crowded). |
| Endocytosis | When large molecules, such as bacteria and proteins, enter the cell. |
| Exocytosis | When large molecules, such as bacteria and proteins by the Golgi bodies, exit the cell. |
| Osmisos | The movement of water from high concentration to low concentration. |
| Passive Transport | Movement across the cell membrane that requires no energy. |
| Semi-permeable (or selectively premeable) | The ability to allow some things to pass through while preventing others from passing through. The cell membrane is semi-permeable. |
