| Term | Definition |

| zygote | the result of fertilization |
| Fertilization | the joining of sperm and egg |
| True Breeding | produce offspring identical to themselves if allowed to self pollinate |
| Trait | a specific characteristic (ex: seed color, dimples, etc) |
| Hybrid | the offspring of parents with different traits |
| Gene | chemical factors that determine traits |
| Allele | different gene choices for a trait (ex: eye color- black, blue, brown) |
| Segregation | the separation of alleles |
| F1 | first filial (or generation) of offspring |
| Dominant | the allele that always appears if present |
| Recessive | the allele that only appears if dominant is not present |
| Heterozygous | has two different alleles for a trait (ex:Tt) |
| Homozygous | has two of the same alleles for a trait (ex: TT or tt) |
| Phenotype | the physical characteristic seen (ex: short) |
| Genotype | the genetic makeup for the trait (tt) |
