Are lipids soluble or insoluble? Insoluble
What are lipids soluble in? Organic solvents such as ethanol
What are triglycerides? Lipids that we eat, which are also used as energy stores in plants and animals.
What are triglycerides made up of? A glycerol molecule and 3 fatty acids
What is the name of the bond that forms between each fatty acid and the glycerol? Ester bond
What is a saturated fat? A fatty acid chain in a lipid which contains the maximum number of hydrogen atoms.
Do saturated fats have c=c double bonds? No
Why are saturated fats solid at room temperature? Because of the strong intermolecular bonds between the triglycerides
How many double bonds do monounsaturated fats have between two of the carbon atoms in each fatty acid? One
Do unsaturated fats have c=c double bonds? Yes
Where is cholesterol made in our body? In the liver, from saturated fats
What are phospholipids? When one fatty acid from a triglyceride is replaced by a -ly charged phosphate group.
How is BMI measured? body mass(kg)/height^2(m^2)
