| Edema | Abnormal increase in the amount of interstitial fluid; causes swelling. |
| Vasoconstriction | Narrowing of blood vessels. |
| Buffer System | Chemical substance/system that minimizes changes in the pH by releasing or binding hydrogen ions. |
| Acidosis | State of abnormally high hydrogen ion concentration in the extracellular fluid. |
| Alkalosis | State of abnormally low hydrogen ion concentration in the extracellular fluid. |
| Oliguria | Decreased water output. |
| Intracellular Fluid (ICF) | Fluid within a cell. |
| Extracellular Fluid (ECF) | Internal fluid located outside cells; includes interstitial fluid, blood plasma, and cerebrospinal fluid. |
| Ion | Atom or molecule with a positive or negative electric charge. |
| Cation | An ion with a positive charge. |
| Osmolarity | The number of solute particles present in 1 liter of a solution. |
| Hydrostatic Pressure | Pressure of fluid in a system. |
| Hyponetremia | A condition of unusually low levels of plasma proteins causing a reduction in colloid osmotic pressure; results in tissue edema. |
| Interstitial Fluid (IF) | Fluid between the cells. |
| Electrolyte | Chemical Substances, such as salts, acids, and bases, that ionize and dissociate in water and are capable of conducting an electrical current. |
