| alveoli | the microscopic air sacs found in the lungs; gas exchanges in the lungs here |
| chyme | the thick acidic liquid mixture made of partially digested food in the stomach;mixture in the stomach made during the digestive process |
| pyloric sphincter | the contents of the stomach must pass through this muscle before entering the small intestine |
| villi | the tiny fingerlike projections that line the surface of the small intestine; helps with the absorption of nutrients; as the surface area increases, the rate of absorption increases |
| peristalsis | the involuntary muscular contractions that move food through the digestive tract; if it did not occur food would stay lodged in the body |
| tendon | the connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone |
| cartilage | the dense connective tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint; it protects bone from grinding together |
| sternum | the breastbone located in the middle of the chest |
| neuron | the basic unit of the nervous system; a nerve cell; 3 main parts: cell body, axon, & dentrite |
| medulla oblongata | the lower portion of the brain stem; responsible for controlling basic life functions such as: respiration, swallowing, heartbeat, and digestion, |
| optic nerve | a cranial nerve that carries visual stimuli from the retina (eye) to the brain;visual stimuli get to the brain through these |
| capillaries | the tiny vessels that carry the blood from the arteries to the cells;blood leaves arteries and travels through these tint vessels to the cells |
| smooth muscle | involuntary muscles that line internal organs |
| skeletal muscles | voluntary muscles that hold the skeleton together and tire easily; such as the biceps |
| cardiac muscle | the muscle found only in the heart |
| central nervous system | made up of the brain and the spinal cord; it receives, processes, & initiates responses |
| peripheral nervous system | composed of the nerves which carry impulses to and from the brain |
| esophagus | connects the throat with the stomach |
| kidney | filters blood and makes urine |
| large intestine | feces (poop) are formed here |
| small intestine | most nutrient absorption takes place here |
| vertebral column | protects the spinal cord |
