meiosis
| Term | Definition |

| Homologous | an identical pair of chromosomes or genes |
| Diploid | contains 2 sets of homologous chromosomes (2n) |
| Haploid | contains one set of genes (1n) |
| Meiosis | the process of reduction division that creates four genetically different haploid cells |
| Tetrad | the homologous chromosomes pair up(X X) |
| Crossing Over | the chromosomes in a tetrad exchange (trade) portions of the chromosome |
| Gamete | the sex cells, the sperm in males, the ovum (egg) in females. Have half the number of chromosomes (1n) |
| Somatic Cell | the body cells, contain two sets of chromosomes (2n) |
