Notecards for Bio 11/4
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Energy | The ability to do work. Energy helps with every task that occurs in your body. All cells require energy. |
| Photosynthesis | The chemical process that turns carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates when sunlight and chlorophyll are present. |
| Producers | Photosynthetic organisms that produce carbohydrate molecules, also known as energy in the chemical bonds. |
| Biomass | Living matter and is the total organic matter in an ecosystem. |
| Autotroph | Cells that self-feed. |
| Consumer | These are organisms that eat other organisms. |
| Heterotroph | Also organisms that eat other organisms, because they cannot produce their own food. |
| Herbivores | Animals that eat only plants. |
| Primary Consumers | First level consumers, also known as herbivores. |
| Secondary Consumers | Get energy when primary consumers are eaten. |
| Carnivores | Meat eaters and secondary consumers. Survive by eating herbivores. |
| Tertiary Consumers | Animals that feed on secondary consumers. Also known as omnivores. |
| Omnivores | Eat both producers and consumers. |
| Decomposers | Mainly bacteria and fungi, these organisms die without ever being eaten. When they die they are usually eaten by consumers at the bottom of a body of water. |
| Trophic Level | Organisms that are grouped by how or what food they eat. |
| Cellular Respiration | The metabolic processes whereby certain organisms obtain energy from organic molecules. |
| Detritus | The waste and remains of dead organisms. |
| Food Webs | The pattern of feeding in an ecosystem. |
| Food Chain | Pathway of food transfer from one trophic level to another. |
