TermDefinition
Energy The ability to do work. Energy helps with every task that occurs in your body. All cells require energy.
Photosynthesis The chemical process that turns carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates when sunlight and chlorophyll are present.
Producers Photosynthetic organisms that produce carbohydrate molecules, also known as energy in the chemical bonds.
Biomass Living matter and is the total organic matter in an ecosystem.
Autotroph Cells that self-feed.
Consumer These are organisms that eat other organisms.
Heterotroph Also organisms that eat other organisms,because they cannot produce their own food.
Herbivores Animals that eat only plants.
Primary Consumers First level consumers, also known as herbivores.
Secondary Consumers Get energy when primary consumers are eaten.
Carnivores Meat eaters and secondary consumers. Survive by eating herbivores.
Tertiary Consumers Animals that feed on secondary consumers. Also known as omnivores.
Omnivores Eat both producers and consumers.
Decomposers Mainly bacteria and fungi, these organisms die without ever being eaten. When they die they are usually eaten by consumers at the bottom of a body of water.
Trophic Level Organisms that are grouped by how or what food they eat.
Cellular Respiration The metabolic processes whereby certain organisms obtain energy from organic molecules.
Detritus The waste and remains of dead organisms.
Food Webs The pattern of feeding in an ecosystem.
Food Chain Pathway of food transfer from one trophic level to another.
