| term | definition |

| relief | the change of elevation between two points |
| gradient | the ratio between two points' relief and their distance |
| contour lines | lines on topographic maps that connect points of the same elevation |
| contour interval | the difference in elevation between two contour lines |
| index contour | a contour line that is accentuated in thickness and is labeled with the appropriate measure of elevation, they usually occur every fifth contour line |
| prime meridian | an imaginary line running from the North Pole to the South Pole, passing through Greenwich, England; the 0* reference line for longtitude |
| equator | an imaginary line , at 0* latitude, that circles Earth exactly half way between the North and South Poles; separates Earth into the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere |
