TermDefinition
Trait A characteristic that is inherited.
Heredity The transmission of genetic traits from parent to offspring.
Genotype The set of genes that make up an organism.
Allele The variations of a specific gene.
Dominant allele The allele that hides the effects of another allele.
Recessive allele The allele whose effect is hidden when paired with a dominant allele.
Purebred An organism with identical alleles for a particular trait.
Hybrid An organism that has 2 different alleles for a particular trait.
Punnett square A diagram used to show possible genetic combinations.
Homozygous Having the presence of the same 2 alleles for the same gene.
Heterozygous Having the presence of 2 different alleles for the same gene.
Pedigree A record that shows a family tree and family inheritance patterns.
Codominance Alleles that display equal power in determining phenotype.
Incomplete dominance A condition in which both alleles influence the phenotype, causing a blended appearance.
Phenotype the observable characteristics as expressed by the genes or genotype
