Explain the 2 types of hyphae that fungi can have. Septate (hyphae divided by cross-walls into cells by septa) and aseptate (hyphae without septa, allowing nutrients to flow freely and quickly).
Name/Explain the 3 ways that fungi can obtain food. 1. Saprophytic; feeding on dead organisms (decomposers) 2. Parasitic; absorb nutrients from the living cells of another host. 3. Mutualistic; receives food from host, and the host benefits from the fungi.
What types of foods do we get from the kingdom fungi? Mushrooms, yeast for bread, and truffles.
What are 3 helpful characteristics found in the fungus Claviceps purpurea? Reduction of high blood pressure, controlling excessive bleeding, and treating migraine headaches.
What is cyclosporine (from Tolypocladium inflatum) used for? It is given to organ transplant patients to keep their bodies from rejecting the new organ.
Give 3 harmful effects of fungi. 1. Attacks trees, crops, and gardens 2. Infects insects like butterflies and moths 3. Causes disease/infection
What do lichens need to grow? Where are they found? Lichens need only air, light, and minerals and they are found in harsh conditions.
How do both organisms benefit that are found in a mycorrhizal relationship? The fungus absorbs & concentrates minerals for the plant, the hyphae increase the plant's root surface area for absorption, and the fungus receives cabs and amino acids from the plant.
