Biology Terms

TermDefinition
Anaphase When chromosomes move away from each other to the opposite side of the spindle.
Cell Cycle The sequence of growth and division of the cell.
Centriole Parts of the cell that are responsible for reproduction.
Centromere The point on a chromosome by which it is attached to a spindle fiber during cell division.
Chromatin What chromosomes are composed of.
Chromosome The part of the cell that contains genetic material.
Cytokinesis The cytoplasmic division of a cell at the end of mitosis or meiosis.
Interphase The resting phase between successive mitotic divisions of a cell.
Metaphase The second stage of cell division, between prophase and anaphase, during when the chromosomes become attached to the spindle fibers.
Mitosis A type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus.
Organ A part of an organism that is self-contained and has its own function.
Organ System A group of parts of an organism that has its own function.
Prophase The first phase of cell division when the chromosome becomes visible.
Sister Chromatids The two halves of the doubled structure.
Spindle A group of small tubes formed when a cell divides.
Telophase The final phase of cell division in which the chromatids or chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell and two nuclei are formed.
Tissue A structure of connected items.
Cancer A disease caused by uncontrollable cell division.
Gene A unit of heredity that is transferred from the parent to the offspring.
