Organelles

Functions of Organelles

TermDefinition
Cell Wall A stiff barrier that provides support and protects plant and prokaryotic cells
Centrioles Organelles that occur in pairs and are used in cell division
Chloroplast An organelle in plant cells that contains chlorophyll and is the site of photosynthesis
Cilia Hair-like structures on the outside of the cell that help the cell move and feed
Cytoskeleton Cellular framework located inside the cytoplasm. Provides structure for the cell.
Endoplasmic Reticulum Organelle that has many folds. It is where proteins are made.
Flagella Long single structure that helps the cell move.
Golgi Apparatus Organelle that modifies and packages up proteins.
Lysosome Vesicle that breaks down old organelles or other structures.
Mitochondrion Organelle that provides energy for the cell
Nucleus Control center of the cell. Contains DNA
Plasma Membrane Flexible boundary that protects the cell and controls what comes in and out of the cell.
Ribosome The specific part of the cell that makes proteins. Can be attached to the endoplasmic reticulum.
Vacuole Vesicle used to store materials.
Nucleolus Located inside the nucleus, this is the site of ribosome production.
Nuclear Membrane Double membrane that surrounds the nucleus. It controls what goes in and out of the nucleus
cytoplasm gel-like fluid inside the cell that contains all the organelles.
