Organelles
Functions of Organelles
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Wall | A stiff barrier that provides support and protects plant and prokaryotic cells |
| Centrioles | Organelles that occur in pairs and are used in cell division |
| Chloroplast | An organelle in plant cells that contains chlorophyll and is the site of photosynthesis |
| Cilia | Hair-like structures on the outside of the cell that help the cell move and feed |
| Cytoskeleton | Cellular framework located inside the cytoplasm. Provides structure for the cell. |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | Organelle that has many folds. It is where proteins are made. |
| Flagella | Long single structure that helps the cell move. |
| Golgi Apparatus | Organelle that modifies and packages up proteins. |
| Lysosome | Vesicle that breaks down old organelles or other structures. |
| Mitochondrion | Organelle that provides energy for the cell |
| Nucleus | Control center of the cell. Contains DNA |
| Plasma Membrane | Flexible boundary that protects the cell and controls what comes in and out of the cell. |
| Ribosome | The specific part of the cell that makes proteins. Can be attached to the endoplasmic reticulum. |
| Vacuole | Vesicle used to store materials. |
| Nucleolus | Located inside the nucleus, this is the site of ribosome production. |
| Nuclear Membrane | Double membrane that surrounds the nucleus. It controls what goes in and out of the nucleus |
| cytoplasm | gel-like fluid inside the cell that contains all the organelles. |
